ow available at auction from Second Vintage This classic early 1960s Seikomatic stands out with a beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial and applied gold-tone indices. Powered by the early 20-jewel caliber 603 automatic movement, it features a characteristic recessed crown at four o'clock that gives the stainless steel case a perfectly symmetrical profile. Brand: Seiko Model: Seikomatic Reference Number: 15007D Serial Number: 1112447 Movement: Automatic, caliber 603, 20 jewels Dial: Silver sunburst with applied gold-tone faceted indices Case Size: 37 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Stainless Steel Production Year: 1961 Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -39-42s/day, running in operational condition. Dial and Hands The dial is exceptionally clean, featuring a radiant silver sunburst finish that shows minimal signs of aging. Applied gold-tone faceted indices provide a sharp contrast, complemented by crisp printed text. The gold-tone dauphine hands display an honest, lightly aged character, with light oxidation and micro-spotting visible under magnification. Case and Crystal The polished stainless steel case displays honest vintage wear, with moderate surface scratches consistent with its age, while the lugs retain good overall shape. A smooth, polished bezel is integrated into the case design and shows expected surface scratches. The case features a recessed crown positioned at four o'clock, creating a sleek silhouette. A clear domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, presenting excellently with no major scratches, chips, or crazing visible. Movement Inside the case beats the automatic Seikomatic caliber 603. The rotor is clearly engraved with SEIKOMATIC 20 JEWELS SEIKOSHA, and the plates show normal vintage condition. Some dirt and grime are visible around the inner case rim where the caseback seats. The timegrapher records a rate of -39-42s/day. Running in operational condition. Maintains the authentic mechanical character of the watch. Strap The watch is fitted with a fresh dark brown leather strap detailed with contrast stitching. The strap appears unworn or very lightly used, pairing nicely with the vintage aesthetic of the dial. Condition Good vintage condition. The exceptionally clean dial presents beautifully, though the gold-tone hands show light oxidation and micro-spotting under magnification. The polished stainless steel case and bezel exhibit moderate surface scratches and honest wear consistent with age. Internally, the movement components show normal wear, with some dirt and grime noted around the inner case rim. Dimensions The case measures 37 mm in diameter (excluding the crown). Remarks This Seikomatic offers a highly attractive dial configuration and traditional early 1960s proportions. The symmetrical case design, achieved through the recessed crown, makes it a refined choice for any collector of mid-century Japanese timepieces. History Introduced in 1960, the 20-jewel version of the Seikomatic caliber 603 represented a significant step in Seiko's automatic movement development. Measuring 4.80 mm in height, this rhodium-plated caliber was designed exclusively for automatic winding, lacking a manual-winding facility. This technical choice allowed Seiko's designers to recess the crown at the four o'clock position, emphasizing the automatic nature of the watch by tucking the crown out of sight and creating a perfectly symmetrical case profile.
