Grotius proklamierte die 'Freiheit der Meere', die allen Nationen zum freien Handelsverkehr offenstehen sollte. Der englische Universalgelehrte John Selden (1584-1654) wandte sich aus nationalistischen Beweggründen dagegen und forderte die Hoheit des Vereinigten Königreichs über alle seine umgebenen Meere. Grotius proclaimed the 'freedom of the seas', which should be open to all nations for free trade. The English polymath John Selden (1584-1654) opposed this for nationalist reasons and demanded sovereignty of the United Kingdom over all its surrounding seas. The first edition appeared in 1635 – with the map of 'Anglia'.
