SEMPÉ — HOW YOU CATCH A COLD… IN 12 PICTURES — 1957 — INCOMPLETE SET SEMPÉ (Jean-Jacques). How You Catch a Cold… in 12 Pictures. Paris, Laboratoires Le Brun, 1957. Advertising portfolio illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempé, published by Laboratoires Le Brun. The complete set originally consisted of 12 color plates, one for each month of the year, accompanied by an illustrated folder. Incomplete copy comprising the folder and only 5 of the 12 required plates. Each plate features, on the front, a humorous color scene by Sempé, depicting the different ways of “catching a cold” throughout the seasons; the reverse side features a monthly calendar for 1957 and an advertisement for the pharmaceutical products of Laboratoires Le Brun: Eucalyptine Le Brun, Eucalyptine-Penicillin, Pancalcion, Isoniazid-Eucalyptol, Mictasol, etc. An interesting advertising piece from Sempé’s early career, part of his first collaboration with Laboratoires Le Brun for this series. Condition: The folder shows foxing spots, stains, and minor wear; the five preserved plates also have a few scattered foxing spots, with colors that remain vivid. Seven of the twelve plates are missing.
