SENECA (Lucius Annaeus). *De Divina Providentia*, Book 1; and *De Paupertate*, another short treatise (16 folios, the last one blank, signed aa-bb8) - *De Moribus*, Book 1 (8 folios, signed a8) - *On the Four Virtues*, Book One (8 folios, signed a8) - *On Liberal Studies*, Book One (8 folios, signed *8*) - *On Remedies for Contingencies*, a short treatise (8 folios, signed AA8) - Epistolae Senecae et Pauli (8 leaves, the last one blank, signed Aa8) - De Vita Beata, one book (24 leaves, signed A-C8) - De Tranquillitate Vitae, two books (32 leaves, signed a-d8). Lyon, Sulpice Sabon for Antoine Constantin, 1543. A collection of eight works in a single small 8vo volume (155 x 100 mm), with a contemporary binding in fawn calfskin, with a plate featuring extensive arabesque and interlaced ornamentation enhanced with green, red, blue, and white wax on the covers; smooth spine decorated with azure fillets and ironwork; gilt and chiseled edges; slipcase. A remarkable collection of the complete series of Seneca’s eight philosophical treatises, printed in Lyon by Sulpice Sabon for the bookseller Antoine Constantin. Each volume has its own title page and separate pagination. Antoine Constantin’s “Rocher” mark appears on the title pages of all the volumes. “These eight treatises by Seneca should not be separated, but it is very rare to find them together” (Baudrier, *Bibliographie lyonnaise*, II, p. 33). The order in which they should be arranged (which has not been followed here) was indicated by the printer Sabon in a note on the reverse of the title page of *De Liberalibus studiis*. An exceptional and very fine copy, carefully adjusted and bound in a very elegant period binding painted with wax, featuring finely chiseled edges, typical of the most beautiful Lyon-made bindings of this kind. Complete, including the two blank leaves at the end of the *De Paupertate* and the *Epistolae*. Titles partially highlighted in yellow ink. A few minor and very skillful restorations to the binding. On the reverse of the last endpaper, an “ex dono” inscription in brown ink to Bishop Claude Michel, dated August 4, 1568. Below, a carefully calligraphed Latin inscription in five lines: Hoc libro... Acquired by Émile Rossignol in 1958.
