All auctions / Jewellery & Gems / Sentimental Brooch with Amethyst and Citrine Hearts in Gold, c. 1890

This romantic brooch features two hearts beside each other. A citrine and an amethyst have each been cut into the shape of a heart and set in gold. Delicate natural pearls surround the hearts. Above them is a bow, symbolizing unity. Natural pearls are also incorporated into the ribbons of the bow. Pieces of jewellery featuring hearts made of gemstones first became very fashionable in the 18th century, and then again in the late 19th century. This brooch dates from this second wave of heart-shaped jewellery; the use of colourful gemstones is quite typical of this period, while the combination with warm yellow gold and pearls was, in turn, very fashionable in Great Britain. We therefore assume that this brooch also originates from England. For the dating of the brooch, see David Benett and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewelry, London 2010, p. 258.
