Offered for auction is a remarkable pair of old wooden amulet figures from Yapen Island, Geelvink Bay, West Papua. Such figures were kept as personal amulets and could accompany their owner in many different situations. They were believed to provide protection, attract good fortune and offer spiritual support during travel, hunting, illness or other important moments in life. Their significance was therefore not merely decorative; they belonged to a world in which ancestral and spiritual forces formed an integral part of everyday life. Both figures are carved from wood and have acquired an attractive aged surface and patina. Their small size and individual character are typical of objects intended to be carried, kept among personal possessions or stored in the house.
