Imperial Russian. A charming set of five cordial (vodka) cups in silver-gilt, each with a tapering body on a short stem and a stepped circular foot. They are lavishly decorated with polychrome cloisonné enamel against a finely stippled ground. The upper register holds a frieze of white quatrefoil blossoms with ruby centers, alternating with crimson buds and emerald scrolling leaves. Below, a band of sweeping cobalt arches frames sky-blue and turquoise palmettes with red accents. The foot is ringed with a delicate border of turquoise enamel beads, and the interiors are gilt. The vibrant palette and stylized floral motifs draw on the traditional Russian decorative vocabulary popularized by the great Moscow enamel workshops around 1900. These were made for toasting at festive tables, and together they make a jewel-like set for display or use. Marks: maker’s mark “ADLER” in a rectangular cartouche, with an additional female face in profile facing left beneath, to the underside of the foot. Also marked 88, although each tests higher than 92% silver purity. Item # 205729
