Set of four Maasai ear ornaments, Inchonito oo Nkiyaa – Kenya – Leather and glass beads Details Origin: Maasai people Country: Kenya Object type: Ear ornaments / earrings, Inchonito oo Nkiyaa Material: Leather, glass beads, fibre / thread, plastic Dimensions: approx. 13 to 14 cm long each Period: 1970s–1980s Provenance: Collected by the current owner Custom display stand: not included Description A colourful set of four Maasai ear ornaments, known as Inchonito oo Nkiyaa, from Kenya. This type of elongated beaded leather ornament was worn through the stretched earlobe and belongs to the rich tradition of Maasai personal adornment. The set is especially attractive for the strength of its geometric beadwork. Each piece follows the same general structure, with a long leather support, rectangular colour fields and a rounded lower end, but each has its own arrangement of colours and motifs. The beadwork combines orange, red, black, white, yellow and green glass beads, creating a vivid and highly decorative visual rhythm. The designs alternate between blocks of colour, triangular motifs, borders and curved terminal patterns. A very appealing group of Maasai ornaments, appreciated for their graphic quality, bright colours and strong decorative presence. Condition Good used condition overall. Wear, abrasions, small losses, minor bead losses, loose threads, leather dryness and age-related surface marks. The leather supports show signs of use and handling. Please refer to the photographs. Included The four ear ornaments only. No display stand included.
