Coastal Light and Maritime Tradition: Ligurian Seascape with Boats by Severino Borotti The work Ligurian Seascape with Boats by Severino Borotti represents a significant interpretation of the Ligurian coastal landscape, a subject that has always fascinated Italian painters for the richness of its luminous effects and for the deep link between sea and daily life. Executed in 1982 in oil on primed cardboard and measuring 30 × 40 cm, the painting conveys a serene and harmonious view, in which the boats and the marine landscape become protagonists of a balanced composition of immediate legibility. Severino Borotti and the Marine Landscape In Severino Borotti’s output, the landscape occupies a central role, with a particular fondness for coastal views and the quirks of the Ligurian Riviera. Through a figurative painting with a traditional approach, the artist seeks a balance between fidelity to reality and personal interpretation, privileging the rendering of atmosphere and natural light. In Ligurian Seascape with Boats, the subject of anchored boats fits naturally into the coastal context, evoking the quiet of Ligurian small ports and the secular relationship between the sea and maritime communities. The composition seems to develop through an harmonious arrangement of elements, where the dialogue between water, sky, and the profile of the coast helps create a scene of great serenity. Mediterranean light thus becomes the protagonist of the work, shaping surfaces and reflections and giving the entire view a pleasant sense of balance and naturalness. Technical and Stylistic Analysis The use of oil on primed cardboard allows the solidity of the support to be united with the softness of the prepared surface for oil painting, favoring a fluid application and a rich color range. This technique is particularly suited to landscape representation, allowing the masses’ construction and the tonal variations to be enhanced. The 30 × 40 cm format offers an ideal balance between breadth of the view and immediacy of the composition, enabling the artist to clearly organize the relationship between the foreground, the water surface, and the background landscape. The signature at the bottom left and the date 1982 confer full autograph status to the work and document with precision its chronological placement within the artist’s production. The brushwork, presumably measured and sensitive, appears oriented toward privileging the synthesis of the scene and the atmospheric quality over analytical description of details, in perfect harmony with the Italian figurative landscape tradition. Collectible Value and Conclusions The work is offered complete with a frame, an element that further enhances its aesthetic presence and facilitates its integration into a private collection or a classically styled environment. The estimate of 200 euros represents an interesting opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts of Italian landscape painting, offering a signed, dated painting with a pleasant execution quality. In conclusion, Ligurian Seascape with Boats by Severino Borotti constitutes a delicate example of contemporary marine painting, in which compositional balance, luminous sensitivity, and a love for the Ligurian landscape merge into an elegant and soothing depiction. A work capable of evoking the authentic charm of the Riviera through sober, harmonious painting rich in atmosphere.
