Sewing set (5) Napoleon III Style - 800 silver, complete.

French silver repoussé sewing kit in 800 silver, rosewood case, c. 1880-1900 Elegant sewing kit (nécessaire à couture) of French origin, composed of four richly worked silver pieces: a cylindrical needle case (étui), a thimble, an awl with an ornamental handle, embroidery scissors, all housed in its original fitted box. All pieces share a homogeneous repoussé decoration in the neo-Rococo / Napoleon III style, with abundant volutes, floral motifs, escutcheons and relief mascarons, typical of the historicist taste of the late 19th century. The set is complete in its original rosewood coffin‑shaped case. The “800” mark visible on the thimble confirms the use of continental sterling silver, common in French and European production of the period. The pieces are made in 800-grade silver by repoussé and chased techniques, with steel blades in the scissors and the awl. The thimble features the characteristic knurling on the dome and a floral frieze at the base, with the numerical “800” and the size number “6” clearly stamped. The étui is two parts that unscrew/fit together to store needles inside. The rosewood case shows beveled edges with a light wood marquetry fillet, a brass cartouche in the form of a card-like plaque on the lid (no monogram engraved) and a burgundy velvet interior liner cut to the shape of each implement. Overall condition is good, given its age and use. The silver pieces retain fine detail in the repoussé, with patina and slight tarnish residue. The steel of the scissors and awl shows some polishing loss, but they remain sharp as the first day. The case shows signs of use, with small losses and lifting at the white ribbed edging of the interior velvet lining. The set remains complete with its four original tools and the box retains its hinges and metal clasp in perfectly functional condition. Silver sewing kits in hardwood cases were highly valued feminine accessories during the 19th century, appreciated for both practicality and their luxury status as gifts. Complete examples, with all four pieces matching in their original box, are increasingly difficult to find, as they were often dispersed. The decorative coherence of the set, the 800 silver hallmark, and the presence of the rosewood case make it an attractive piece for collectors of sewing tools, miniature silver, and display objects. Period: Late 19th century (c. 1880-1900) Material: Silver, Wood, Steel, Brass Origin: France Condition: Good
