SHARK Melanesia, Bismarck Archipelago, New Ireland Eroded white limestone with an aged patina, traces of calcification, and old chips L. 41 cm – W. 16 cm Very large effigy of a sacred shark used in worship and ritualized shark fishing. Although highly stylized, the effigy nevertheless features realistic details: dorsal and pectoral fins, mouth, and eyes. The shark’s tail is thickened, with fins reduced to a minimum. See a similar, though smaller, example in the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, catalog number 70.2001.9.1.
