Sherman, Texas. $10 1902 Red Seal. Fr. 613. Merchants & Planters NB. Charter #3159. PCGS Banknote Choice Fine 15 Details. Corner Replaced, Stained. Representative of a "common" bank out of North Texas. This Series of 1902 $10 Red Seal issued by the Merchants and Planters National Bank of Sherman (Charter# 3159) is nonetheless an extremely rare item as one of just three pieces recorded in the National Bank Note Census for this short-lived type that was discontinued after Aldrich-Vreeland was passed in 1908. Here signs of prolonged circulation may be observed along with the impetus behind the "Corner Replaced" comment that can be readily observed at left along the bottom margin while penned "Asst" and "V" notations are apparent below their respective signature panels and echo the names of two men who signed this note the day it was issued in the early 1900s. Yet these imperfections are only secondary considerations that will never overshadow the rarity of this rare financial instrument which survived a long yet brutish stint in commercial channels. PCGS Banknote comments "Corner Replaced, Stained." Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
