For sale is this exceptional and painstakingly crafted bronze group depicting the Hindu god Shiva (Maheshvara) on his sacred bull Nandi. Shiva is presented here in an impressive ten-armed form. The numerous arms are arranged fan-like around the body and hold various weapons and symbolic attributes, including clearly recognizable bows and a sword. Comparable Thai representations are referred to in museum collections as ten-armed Shiva/Maheshvara on Nandi. Notably striking are the tall, sharply pointed headdress, the richly ornate chest jewelry, and the very detailed ornamented garment. Shiva sits on the fully sculpted bull Nandi, who in Hindu tradition is Shiva’s mount (Vahana). Nandi is also elaborately designed. The large saddle blanket features numerous floral and geometric motifs. On the sides there are additional gold-colored decorative elements. The entire group stands on a rectangular, ornamented base. The combination of the prominently greenish-blue patina of the bronze and the numerous gold-colored sections on the headdress, jewelry, garment, saddle blanket, and base is very decorative. Dimensions & weight: Height approx. 43 cm, Width approx. 25 cm, Depth approx. 9 cm, Weight approx. 3,813 g (3.813 kg). Material: Bronze. Execution: cast, strongly green patinated and partially gold-colored finish. Representation: Shiva/Maheshvara on Nandi. Style/Origin: Thailand / Southeast Asian depiction. The sculpture comes from an inherited collection of Asian art and decorative objects. Condition is used and shows clear signs of age and wear. Present are a strong greenish patina, oxidation and staining traces, rubbing as well as areas of wear to the gold finish. In some fine areas of the arms, hands and attributes there are casting irregularities or minor damages visible. On the legs of the bull there are lighter deposits or discolorations. The base and underside also show noticeable signs of use, patina, and aging.
