Shmidt.Art - Alfa Romeo - Tipo 158 - 1950s

A premium automotive poster dedicated to the 1950 Alfa Romeo 158 “Alfetta” — one of the most successful Grand Prix racing cars of its era and a machine forever associated with the beginning of the Formula One World Championship. This artwork presents the Alfa Romeo Tipo 158 in a detailed technical blueprint composition, combining precise front, side and rear elevations with a large top-down mechanical cutaway, dimensional references and comprehensive engineering specifications. The Grand Prix Alfetta Originally developed before the Second World War, the Alfa Romeo 158 was continuously refined into one of the dominant racing machines of the post-war period. The nickname “Alfetta”, meaning “little Alfa”, reflected the car’s compact proportions, but its performance was anything but modest. In 1950, the Tipo 158 became the defining car of the inaugural Formula One World Championship season. Driven by legendary names including Giuseppe Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli, the 158 dominated Grand Prix competition, with Farina ultimately securing the first Formula One Drivers’ World Championship for Alfa Romeo. Supercharged Grand Prix Engineering At the heart of the Tipo 158 is a compact 1.5-litre inline-eight engine, equipped with twin Roots-type superchargers in its highly developed racing specification. The engine is mounted longitudinally at the front, while the gearbox is positioned at the rear as part of a transaxle arrangement. This engineering solution helped improve weight distribution while maintaining the narrow, streamlined proportions required of a competitive Grand Prix machine. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, while the extremely lightweight construction and narrow open-wheel bodywork contribute to the car’s remarkable performance. Design & Aesthetic The poster uses a warm ivory background with restrained black, grey and burgundy detailing inspired by historic Alfa Romeo competition drawings, engineering documents and mid-century technical publications. The composition features a large true side profile together with front and rear elevations, while the centerpiece is an extensive top-down cutaway view revealing the supercharged straight-eight engine, drivetrain, cockpit, rear transaxle, suspension and internal chassis arrangement. Fine dimensional markings, technical annotations and a period-inspired Alfa Romeo Reparto Corse Milano 1950 stamp reinforce the archival engineering character of the artwork. Poster Details Size: A1 (594 × 841 mm) Orientation: Portrait Subject: Alfa Romeo Tipo 158 “Alfetta” Year: 1950 Engine: 1.5-litre supercharged inline-eight Aspiration: Twin Roots-type superchargers Power: approximately 350 PS Transmission: 4-speed manual Drive: Rear-wheel drive Layout: Front-engine / rear transaxle Racing Weight: approximately 700 kg Motorsport Significance The Alfa Romeo 158 occupies an exceptional place in motorsport history. Its origins predate Formula One itself, yet years of continuous development allowed the design to remain extraordinarily competitive when the new World Championship was established in 1950. Its combination of lightweight construction, sophisticated supercharging and carefully developed chassis engineering made the Alfetta one of the defining Grand Prix cars of the period. More than simply a historic racing machine, the Tipo 158 represents the transition from pre-war Grand Prix engineering into the modern Formula One era. Collector’s Appeal The Alfa Romeo 158 is particularly significant for enthusiasts of historic motorsport, classic Italian engineering and early Formula One. Its connection to Alfa Romeo’s racing heritage, legendary drivers and the inaugural Formula One World Championship gives it a historical importance shared by very few competition cars. This poster is ideal for Alfa Romeo enthusiasts, Formula One collectors and admirers of classic racing engineering. It works particularly well in a home, office, garage, workshop, showroom or automotive collection.
