Subject Significance Introduced in 1963 as the successor to the DB4, the Aston Martin DB5 refined the company’s established grand-touring formula with a larger engine, improved transmission, and greater comfort. Its elegant body was designed by the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring and constructed using the firm’s lightweight Superleggera method. The DB5 was powered by a 4.0-liter, twin-cam inline-six engine producing approximately 282 bhp in standard specification. It was typically paired with a five-speed ZF manual transmission, while an automatic transmission was also available. Disc brakes were fitted to all four wheels. Combining strong performance with a luxurious interior and refined long-distance driving characteristics, the DB5 became one of the defining British grand tourers of the 1960s. Its flowing bodywork, distinctive front grille, covered headlamps, and traditional wire wheels created a design that remains instantly recognizable. The DB5 achieved lasting international fame after appearing as James Bond’s specially equipped car in the 1964 film Goldfinger. This association transformed an already exceptional grand tourer into a global cultural icon. Today, the Aston Martin DB5 is regarded as one of the most desirable and collectible British cars ever produced. Its combination of Italian-influenced styling, British engineering, luxury, performance, and cinematic heritage has secured its place in automotive history.
