Shmidt.Art - DeLorean Motor Company - DMC-12 SPORTS COUPÉ - 1980s

A premium automotive technical poster dedicated to the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 — one of the most distinctive sports cars of the early 1980s, combining brushed stainless-steel bodywork, gull-wing doors and an unconventional rear-engined layout. This artwork presents the DeLorean DMC-12 in a clean factory technical-document style, combining precise front, side, rear and overhead views with dimensional references, mechanical specifications, construction details and a detailed representation of the rear-mounted powertrain. The DeLorean DMC-12 Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the DMC-12 is instantly recognizable for its sharp wedge-shaped profile, unpainted stainless-steel exterior panels and dramatic gull-wing doors. Beneath its futuristic appearance was a distinctive engineering package featuring a rear-mounted V6 engine, composite body structure and steel backbone chassis. The 1981 DMC-12 Production began in 1981 at the DeLorean Motor Cars facility in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland. The car was conceived as a distinctive grand touring sports coupé, combining exotic styling with relatively conventional mechanical components selected for reliability and production feasibility. 2.85-Litre PRV V6 The DMC-12 is powered by a 2849 cc PRV V6 engine developed through the Peugeot-Renault-Volvo collaboration. The naturally aspirated, water-cooled 90-degree V6 uses Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection and a SOHC 12-valve configuration. In European specification, output was approximately 110 kW / 150 PS at 5,500 rpm, with approximately 208 Nm of torque. Rear-Engine Layout The V6 is mounted longitudinally behind the passenger compartment and drives the rear wheels. This arrangement contributes to the DMC-12’s distinctive proportions, with a relatively low front section and substantial mechanical packaging beneath the rear deck. Five-Speed Manual Transmission The illustrated specification uses a five-speed manual gearbox transmitting power to the rear wheels. Combined with the naturally aspirated V6 and mechanical fuel-injection system, the drivetrain reflects the characteristic engineering of European performance cars from the period. Stainless-Steel Construction One of the defining characteristics of the DMC-12 is its brushed stainless-steel exterior. Rather than conventional painted steel body panels, the DeLorean uses stainless-steel outer panels fitted over a composite underbody structure. Beneath this sits a steel backbone-style double-Y chassis, creating an unusual construction method that remains closely associated with the DMC-12. Technical Dimensions Wheelbase: 2413 mm Front track: approximately 1590 mm Rear track: approximately 1588 mm Overall length: 4267 mm Overall width: 1857 mm Overall height: approximately 1140 mm These dimensions emphasize the DMC-12’s unusually low and wide stance, while its long wheelbase contributes to the dramatic wedge-shaped profile. Performance The 2.85-litre V6 produces approximately 150 PS in the specification represented here. Top speed is approximately 210 km/h, while 0–100 km/h acceleration is approximately 8.8 seconds. Curb weight is approximately 1230 kg. Detailed Technical Composition The artwork includes true front and rear orthographic elevations, a large 90-degree side profile, an oversized overhead technical view with exposed rear-engine detail, dimensional measurements, engine specifications, transmission and construction information, performance data and a period-inspired DeLorean Motor Cars engineering quality-control stamp. The warm ivory background, restrained technical linework and structured typography recreate the appearance of an archival engineering document while the subtle metallic treatment of the bodywork references the DMC-12’s famous brushed stainless-steel exterior. Its technical-document aesthetic is particularly suited to enthusiasts of DeLorean, 1980s automotive design, engineering history and iconic sports cars. A technical celebration of one of the most recognizable automobiles ever produced — combining stainless-steel construction, gull-wing design, rear-mounted V6 engineering and unmistakable 1980s styling in an archival-inspired presentation.
