Shmidt.Art - Lancia - DELTA S4 STRADALE - 1980s

A premium automotive technical poster dedicated to the 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale — the road-going homologation version of one of the most technologically extreme machines created during the Group B era. This artwork presents the Delta S4 Stradale in a clean factory technical-document style, combining precise front, side, rear and overhead views with dimensional references and a detailed representation of its mid-mounted twincharged engine and permanent four-wheel-drive system. The Lancia Delta S4 Developed for Group B rally competition, the Delta S4 represented a radical departure from the production-based architecture associated with the earlier Delta. Despite its familiar name and broadly recognizable silhouette, beneath the body the S4 was effectively a purpose-built competition machine constructed around a tubular spaceframe chassis, mid-mounted engine and sophisticated four-wheel-drive system. The Stradale To satisfy homologation requirements, Lancia produced a limited number of road-going Delta S4 Stradale models. Compared with the competition versions, the Stradale was configured for road use with a more refined interior and a significantly less aggressive state of engine tune, while retaining the extraordinary fundamental architecture of the rally car. 1.8-Litre Twincharged Engine At the heart of the Delta S4 is a 1759 cm³ DOHC 16-valve inline-four mounted longitudinally behind the passenger compartment. Its defining feature is twincharging: the engine uses both a mechanically driven Volumex-type supercharger and an exhaust-driven turbocharger. The system was designed to combine strong response at lower engine speeds with the high-output potential of turbocharging. In Stradale specification, the engine produces approximately 184 kW / 250 PS at around 6750 rpm and approximately 291 Nm of torque. Turbocharger + Supercharger The S4’s forced-induction system is one of its most important engineering features. At lower engine speeds, the supercharger provides immediate boost and helps reduce the response delay traditionally associated with large turbochargers of the period. As engine speed and exhaust flow increase, the turbocharger becomes increasingly effective, allowing the engine to deliver strong performance across a broader operating range. This complex arrangement made the S4 one of the most technically fascinating performance cars of the 1980s. Mid-Engine Architecture Unlike the conventional front-engined Delta, the S4 positions its engine longitudinally behind the passenger compartment. The large overhead technical illustration highlights this radically different mechanical layout, revealing the central cabin, mid-mounted powertrain and drivetrain components beneath the compact body. Permanent Four-Wheel Drive Power is transmitted through a five-speed manual gearbox and permanent four-wheel-drive system. The combination of mid-engine weight distribution and four driven wheels was developed specifically around the demands of high-level rally competition, where traction and rapid response across changing surfaces were critical. Tubular Spaceframe Chassis Beneath the body is a tubular spaceframe structure rather than the conventional production-car architecture suggested by the Delta name. Independent suspension is used at both ends, further emphasizing how little the S4 mechanically shared with an ordinary road-going Delta. Technical Dimensions Wheelbase: 2440 mm Front track: Approximately 1500 mm Rear track: Approximately 1500 mm Overall length: 4005 mm Overall width: 1801 mm Overall height: Approximately 1500 mm The short wheelbase and wide track create the compact, purposeful proportions characteristic of the S4. Performance The Stradale’s twincharged 1.8-litre engine produces approximately 250 PS. Top speed is approximately 225 km/h, while 0–100 km/h acceleration is approximately 6.0 seconds. The road car’s approximately 1200 kg curb weight and permanent four-wheel-drive system complete a package fundamentally derived from Lancia’s Group B competition program. Detailed Technical Composition The artwork includes front and rear elevations, a large side profile and an oversized orthographic top view. The overhead illustration is particularly important on the S4, exposing the unusual mechanical architecture hidden beneath its compact body: the longitudinal mid-mounted engine, twincharging hardware, cooling components and drivetrain. Engine, transmission, chassis, dimensional and performance information is organized along the lower section in the style of period engineering documentation. A period-inspired Lancia Abarth technical homologation stamp completes the archival presentation. Its technical-document aesthetic is particularly suited to enthusiasts of Lancia, Group B rallying, homologation specials and unconventional performance engineering. A technical celebration of one of the most sophisticated machines of the Group B era — combining turbocharging and supercharging, a mid-mounted engine, tubular spaceframe chassis and permanent four-wheel drive in a compact road-going homologation special.
