Although the Ashikaga shogunate is regarded as the weakest premodern Japanese government, Yoshimitsu built a period of political stability. Outside politics, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu promoted culture, art, and Buddhism in Japan. Under his patronage, the “traditional arts” began to develop and take shape, and as a monk the Ashikaga Shōgun had a strong influence on the shaping of Buddhism. In 1408, Emperor Go-Komatsu visited Kitayama to meet the Shogun. On this occasion Yoshimitsu organized a grand ceremony and a splendid festival. This visit is today known as the “imperial visit to Kitayama” and was a special event at the time. Go-Komatsu’s successor in 1412 was his son, Emperor Shōkō. The famed Zen Buddhist monk Ikkyū Sōjun was probably his other son. I guarantee the age and originality.
