INSCRIBED FIRST UK EDITIONS. Eugene Heimler (1922-90) was born in Western Hungary. The Heimler family were deported after the German invasion of Hungary in 1944. Heimler was sent to Auschwitz, Buchenwald and other camps. He returned to Hungary after the war and studied for a diploma in social science at the University of Budapest, before moving to England in 1946 and enrolling at the London School of Economics. Heimler trained as a psychiatric social worker from 1951-1953, and practiced initially for the Middlesex County Council from 1953-1965. It was during this period that Heimler conducted the Hendon Experiment, a research project that examined the problem of long-term unemployment. While researching ways to prevent social breakdown, Heimler developed his Heimler Scale of Social Functioning, a clinical tool still cited in social work and psychiatric literature, designed to assess how individuals function after extreme trauma. Heimler seems to be somewhat of an unheralded Primo Levi and Viktor Frankl, who write of the psychological effects of the victims of the Holocaust; Night of the Mist was published in English, 1959, the same year as Levi's If This a Man, as well Frankl's From Death-Camp To Existentialism [Man's Search For Meaning] were published in the US. The first part of Heimler's autobiography runs from 1944 until his "walk back towards life" upon his release from captivity. As much as he wrote to 'bear witness', Heimler sought to understand why some people survived and others did not, psychologically as much as physically. The continuation of Eugene Heimler's autobiography, A Link in the Chain, tracks a grueling journey of transition. It follows his return to an inhospitable, post-war Hungary, his eventual immigration to England to study psychiatry, his own intensive therapy, and his proud acquisition of British citizenship. "For the first time in my life I had equal rights as a citizen." The narrative eventually leads to the composition of the first part of his memoir, The Night of the Mist, and his pioneering success in the field of social work. Rare thus. I: Publisher's light blue boards, unclipped dust jacket. BOOK: Boards are straight and unmarked, a little faded to extremities; page edges a little dust-dulled, book a bit musty. DJ: Unclipped dust jacket practically faultless, toned to extremities. Inscribed by Heimler to title page to unknown (same as Volume II) recipient, dated February 1970. II: Publisher's green boards, unclipped dust jacket. BOOK: Front board ever so slightly bowed; page edges a little dust-dulled, book a bit musty. DJ: Unclipped dust jacket practically faultless, toned to extremities. Inscribed by Heimler to title page to unknown (though same as Volume I) recipient, dated February 1970.
