SUBTITLED: Reminiscences of the Civil War with special reference to the Work for the Contrabands and Freedmen of the Mississippi Valley. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xxxvii, 331 pgs, frontis, illustrations, and folding facsimile of a letter from Grant. Blue cloth with gilt titled spine. Presentation from Ethel Osgood Mason on front free endpaper. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing on edges and cover edges. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: First edition of this important study. John Eaton entered the American Civil War as a chaplain of the 27th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In November 1862, General Grant appointed him superintendent of freedmen and was later given supervision of all military posts from Cairo to Natchez and Fort Smith. General Eaton died in 1906 and it was actually Ethel Osgood Mason who saw the book to its completion and printing. A presentation copy of an increasingly scarce book.
