[Signed] [First Edition] Seven Into Space: The Story of...

First Edition of Seven Into Space: The Story of the Mercury Astronauts by Joseph N. Bell. Chicago: Popular Mechanics Company, 1960. 192 pages, illustrated with photographs and drawings by David Hewitt. Personally inscribed and signed by author Joseph N. Bell on the half-title page: "To 'Buster' Freese, / Merry Christmas 1962, / and best wishes, / Joseph N. Bell." The dated presentation inscription is written directly in the book. Published at the dawn of America's human spaceflight program, Seven Into Space tells the story of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and the development, training, technology, and ambitions behind Project Mercury. The book appeared before the United States had completed its first crewed orbital flight, making it an appealing contemporary document from the earliest years of the American space program. Copyright © 1960 by Joseph N. Bell. Published by Popular Mechanics Company, Chicago. This is the original 1960 hardcover edition. Bound in the publisher's original hardcover binding and retaining the original illustrated dust jacket. The jacket retains the original $3.95 publisher's price on the front flap and is therefore not price-clipped. Condition: Very Good+ book in a Very Good dust jacket. Book remains clean and well preserved, with a firm binding and clean interior. Dust jacket remains complete and attractive but shows rubbing, edge and corner wear, small chips and short tears, and general age-related surface wear. Protected in a clear archival cover. A particularly appealing copy of this early Mercury-program history, signed and personally inscribed by the author in 1962, only two years after publication.
