Printed by Strangeways & Sons, Tower Street, Cambridge Circus. Bound in contemporary half polished calf gilt, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, red and olive morocco lettering-pieces gilt in 2 compartments, stamp-signed by T.M. Bromage. Printed on fine, heavy paper. Uncut, deckled edges. Colophon. Gilt top edge. 450, [2] pp. First one-volume edition. Half-titles, two separate title-pages, continuous pagination. Volume I was initially published in April 1887 and Volume II in November. "The most interesting thing about it is the evidence it gives of Morris's continuing fascination with the idea of the quest, the journey through outlandish territory, impelled onwards by some supernatural force" (Fiona MacCarthy, WILLIAM MORRIS, 1994, p.564). Morris's translation of THE ODYSSEY was done in his unique quasi-Medieval style, which makes for an enjoyable read for those who appreciate and enjoy his colorful use of language. Light rubbing to extremities. The hinges show some weakness but overall the book remains solid. Condition overall: Very Good.
