Hardcover; green cloth-covered boards with gilt-stamped leather spine label. 4to; vii, [iii], 24, [2]pp., followed by (61) black-and-white plates. 12 5/8 x 9 7/8 in. From a Private Pinehurst, North Carolina Collection Bayard Wootten (1875-1959) was a self-taught photographer from New Bern, North Carolina. As a single mother, she earned money to raise her family through portrait photography. Later, she spent time traveling through her home state and capturing life in its rural areas. Wootten was hired to do the illustrations for several books, and became known for her images of southern gardens and architecture in addition to its people. Boards with some wear to extremities and a few scattered spots of discoloration, the spine slightly darkened with mild scuffing and chipping to label; slight separation from text block; light foxing (concentrated to page edges, endpapers, and gutters), browning and spotting at hinges and an occasional gutter, mild toning and offsetting, rare spot of grime and edge wear, and some slight waviness to some plates. An approaching very good copy.
