The work references "The Adventurous Simplicissimus" (*Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus*), the famous satirical novel written by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen in 1668. The book recounts the misadventures of a naive antihero traveling through a Germany devastated by the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). It depicts the excesses of military hierarchies and the absurd pomposity of the combatants. While the cavalier celebrates haughtily—raising his glass and smoking a pipe (*vanitas*)—Death subtly grasps him or follows closely behind. This symbolizes that the warrior’s power, wealth, and pride are transient and futile in the face of an inevitable end. Simon Dittrich typically constructs his historical figures by fusing human physiognomy with complex textures, gears, or micro-architectures, creating the impression that the characters are "puppets" or automatons moved by strings beyond their own control...
