Egypt, Late Period. Six long strands of tiny faience disc beads, many hundreds to a strand, shift in color from turquoise and celadon to sage, straw, and a deep oxidized plum. Each bead was shaped from a quartz-based paste, pierced, and fired so that its alkaline glaze took on the blue-green Egyptian faience is known for, here mottled and softened by age. Small ring-shaped beads like these were made in huge numbers. They were used in netted mummy shrouds, in broad collars, and in simple strung ornaments worn in life, so a funerary origin for these is likely but not certain. The ancient beads have been restrung on modern cord. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 203464
