Six Wedgwood Cups & Saucers, Gift of Margaret Mitchell, 1930s, English Wedgwood (English, founded 1759). Set of six Queensware mulberry transfer decorated commemorative after dinner coffee cups and saucers, each having the dates "1842 / Marthasville / Atlanta / 1942, and depicting various historical Atlanta scenes comprising, "Martha Lumpkin", "Union Depot 1853-1864", "City Hall 1854-1884), "Atlanta Medical College 1856", "General Sherman's Headquarters 1864", and "Home of L.P. Grant", each saucer with with the current seal of the city council depicting a phoenix rising from the ashes with the motto" Resurgence", and the previous seal depicting a locomotive to the back, all appropriately marked Approximate dimensions: cup: 1 1/4 x 3 x 2 1/4 in. (3.2 x 7.6 x 5.7 cm.) saucer flat: 1/2 x 5 x 5 in. (1.3 x 12.7 x 12.7 cm.) Note: Louis Dwight Cole Taylor (American, 1903–1979) was an editor as well as a children's author. Macmillan Publishers sent Cole in 1927 to manage their Atlanta office where she became lifelong friends with Peggy Mitchell Marsh (American, 1900-1949), who wrote under the name Margaret Mitchell. When Cole learned that Marsh was working on a the novel that would become "Gone With The Wind", she ask to read it, which Marsh refused. Eventually Cole would return to New York in 1930. In 1935 Cole introduced Marsh to her boss, the editor Harold Latham (American, 1887-1969) who would eventually have the opportunity to read the unpublished manuscript and pass it on to Lois. Macmillan would publish "Gone With The Wind" in 1936.The Atlanta History Center commissioned from Wedgwood commemorative after dinner coffee services in advance to celebrate the centennial of Atlanta's informal founding as Marthasville in 1842; the city would officially be incorporated in 1843. This set of six cups and saucers were a gift from Marsh to Cole during the Atlanta premiere of "Gone With The Wind" on December 15, 1939. Mitchell notes that "our Mayor raided the Society for fifteen dozen sets to be presented to the movie people." A copy of an unsigned typewritten letter from Marsh dated December 13, 1939, accompanies this lot and they are presented in the original box.Provenance: Private Collection of Robin Beckham, West Lafayette, IN.
