All auctions / Contemporary Art / Sol Lewitt (1928-2007) - Original Gouache auf Papier - Unikat - 1998
An extraordinary original gouache by Sol LeWitt, the prominent American conceptual artist. The work is signed and dated in pencil at the lower right, “S. LeWitt 98”. The gouache was executed on sturdy Fabriano paper with a blind stamp. About the work: The composition is defined by intense violet and blue tones. Several transparent and densely applied layers of color overlap, creating a remarkable spatial depth. This painterly expression in particular makes the piece especially interesting. While Sol LeWitt is best known for his rigorously conceived wall drawings, geometric systems, and modular structures, here a much more immediate visual language is evident. Repetition and structured construction remain recognizable, but are translated into a calm, almost meditative composition through color, transparency, and visible brushwork. Framing: The unique gouache on paper has been perfectly professionally framed. The sheet is presented on violet linen, floating in a custom acid-free mat. A handcrafted wood frame with UltraVue ArtGlass UV70 completes the presentation. Frame size: approx. 57 × 57 cm. About the artist: Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) is one of the central pioneers of Conceptual Art and Minimalism. Since the 1960s, he developed a radically new concept of art in which idea, system, and execution are placed in a new relationship to each other. Alongside his famous Wall Drawings and three-dimensional “Structures,” LeWitt created an extensive œuvre on paper. His works are held in major international museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate in London, and Centre Pompidou in Paris. In particular, his unique works and gouaches on paper fuse LeWitt’s conceptual clarity with a surprisingly sensual color impact and are accordingly in high demand among international collectors.
