SOUTHERN AFRICA the 1926 Pulford survey flight was the...

SOUTHERN AFRICA the 1926 Pulford survey flight was the Royal Air Force's first survey mission from Cairo to Cape Town between 1st Mar & 12th Apr, led by Wing Commander C.W.H Pulford. The flight was a survey and reconnaissance mission following the route previously flown by Van Ryneveld and Brand in 1920. It aimed to gather aerial data for mapping and navigation, and to demonstrate the RAF's operational capabilities over a long-distance route. Pulford carried a few letters that were postmarked on arrival in Cape Town and were to be sent back to London. This cover has the endorsement 'To be carried by air from Cape Town to Alexandria and then posted.' It has been signed by Pulford. A scarce cover.
