SPAIN. Viceroyalty of New Spain. 1738-Mo MF 8 Reales. Mexico City

SPAIN. Viceroyalty of New Spain. 1738-Mo MF 8 Reales. Mexico City Mint. Calico-1449, Yonaka-M8-38, KM-103. AU-53 (PCGS). An American colonial classic, and popular with collectors ever since its inclusion in the Guide Book has helped to identify the Spanish pillar dollar as the most immediate predecessor to the United States silver dollar. This is a nice early date example from the Mexico City Mint with much frosty mint luster retained. Evenly toned in blended silver-apricot and olive-gray iridescence, the pillars side contrasts with a crowned arms side on which warmer golden-apricot and copper-russet patina is seen. This is certainly secondary toning, as fully original AU examples of this type are virtually unknown, but it is attractive, and the surfaces show few hairlines and even fewer singularly distracting marks. Well centered in strike with universally sharp detail, this coin appears to be more of an AU-55 to your cataloger. Regardless of the specific certified grade, it is an above average AU for the type that will nicely represent the iconic pillar dollar in another advanced collection. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 670066. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
