Spanish School (XIX) - Pair Of 19th Century Bourgeois Portraits

PAIR OF BOURGEOIS PORTRAITS Spanish/Catalan School Late 19th Century Oil on canvas Works signed Approximate measurements of the visible oval: 70 x 55 cm each Approximate measurements with frame: 95 x 75 cm each 1. IDENTIFICATION OF THE WORK 1.1. Title Pair of bourgeois portraits 1.2. Authorship and signature Pair of portrait(s) signed, executed in oil on canvas. The signatures are not clearly legible in the available photographs, so the cataloging is prudently presented as a pair of signed portraits from a European / Catalan school of the late 19th century. 1.3. School and chronology The works can be placed in the European school, probably Catalan or Spanish, of the late 19th century. From the attire, the oval composition, the type of frame, the sobriety of the background, and the psychological character of the portraits, the set is clearly linked to the nineteenth‑century bourgeois portrait. 1.4. Technique and support Oil on canvas. Both paintings are presented in their large ornamental golden frames, with an inner oval window and black corner decorations, giving them strong aesthetic presence. 1.5. Approximate measurements Approximate measurements of the visible oval of each portrait: 60 x 45 cm. Approximate total measurements with frame: 95–100 cm tall each. As exact measurements are not available, the figures are approximate and should be taken as indicative. 2. ARTISTIC DESCRIPTION 2.1. General composition The ensemble consists of two bust portraits, one female and one male, conceived clearly as a pair. Both figures are depicted within an oval format, on a greenish-dark background, with sober lighting that concentrates attention on the faces. The composition adheres to the tradition of the nineteenth‑century bourgeois portrait: dignity, discretion, social presence, and a clear intention to preserve the family memory of the subjects. 2.2. Female portrait The female portrait shows an adult woman dressed in black, with a high collar and dark lace, following the elegant and severe fashion of the late 19th century. Her expression is serene, restrained, and slightly melancholic. The gaze, directed at the viewer, conveys character, education, and a marked intimate presence. The painting stands out for the delicacy of the face, the contrast between illuminated skin and black attire, and the sobriety with which the figure is resolved. 2.3. Male portrait The male portrait depicts a gentleman wearing a black suit, white shirt, and bow tie. The face, with a mustache and beard, reflects an image of great elegance and firmness. The figure conveys authority, discretion, and refinement. The frontal pose and restrained color treatment reinforce the solemnity of the portrait. 2.4. Relationship between the two portraits The pair shows strong visual coherence. The two portraits share format, scale, frame, background, color range, and compositional attitude. Everything indicates they were conceived to be displayed together, probably as family or commemorative portraits of a bourgeois marriage. The set is especially attractive because it preserves the artistic and emotional unity of two works conceived as a pair. 3. STYLE, SCHOOL AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT 3.1. Style: Realism Within the usual stylistic categories, the works belong to Realism. This is a nineteenth-century portrait realism, focused on representing the identity, presence, and dignity of the subjects. 3.2. Bourgeois portrait of the 19th century During the 19th century, portraiture was one of the most important genres in bourgeois and family circles. These works not only showed the physical likeness of a person but also their social position, memory, and role within family life. The sobriety of the clothing, the neutral background, and the oval composition fully connect with this tradition. 3.3. Beauty of sobriety The appeal of this pair lies in its quiet elegance. They are not ostentatious portraits in gestural terms, but restrained, serious, deeply human works. Beauty resides in the faces, in the gaze, in the atmospheric quality of the background, and in the monumental presence of the gilded frames. 4. CONDITION 4.1. General state The works are as old as they are, showing visible signs of the passage of time. They present surface dirt, small marks, wear, possible craquelure, abrasions, and usual signs on old paintings on canvas. 4.2. Painted surface The reading of both portraits is clear and attractive. The faces retain good visual presence and the figures keep their aesthetic strength. Small irregularities typical of their age can be observed. 4.3. Reverse side and support The backs show old wooden stretchers, with a structure adapted to the oval format of the canvases. Nails, marks, scratches, small old repairs, and signs of use and time are visible. These elements are part of the material history of the set. 4.4. Frames The frames are one of the great attractions of the pair. They are monumental gilded frames, with inner oval window, ornamental decoration, and black-motif corners. They show signs of age, rubbing, small losses, wear, marks, and possible restorations, visible in the photographs. Nonetheless, they retain a spectacular presence and greatly enhance the decorative value of the set. 4.5. Photographs The photographs are an essential part of the description. They should be studied carefully, as they show the works, the frames, the reverses, and the overall condition. 5. GUARANTEE AND TRANSPARENCY 5.1. Original works A pair of original oil on canvas works is offered. 5.2. Signatures The works are signed, though the exact reading of the signatures cannot be identified with certainty from the available photographs. For this reason, they are not attributed to a specific author and are prudently cataloged as European / Catalan school of the late 19th century. 5.3. Approximate measurements The indicated measurements are approximate, since exact measurement is not available. Total height with frame is estimated to be around 95–100 cm for each piece. 5.4. Professional packaging The works will be shipped with professional packaging, using materials suitable to protect both the canvases and the frames. Due to their size and the ornamental nature of the frames, the set will be prepared carefully to ensure safe delivery. 6. COLLECTING OPPORTUNITY 6.1. A pair with historical presence This pair of portraits has extraordinary presence. It is not merely two old paintings, but a family set, elegant and full of memory. The faces retain the silent dignity of another era, while the large gilded frames contribute an exceptional decorative force. 6.2. Beauty, history and character There is in these portraits an intimate and deep beauty: the beauty of works that have endured time, that have accompanied a family story, and that still retain the gaze of their protagonists. They are pieces with soul, with character, and with a great capacity to transform a space. 6.3. Ideal for interior design and collecting Because of their scale, oval format, and rich ornamentation, the pair is ideal for salons, libraries, offices, private galleries, stately homes, classical interiors, or high-personality decor projects. When displayed together, they create a symmetrical, elegant, and deeply evocative presence. 6.4. Value of the set The possibility of acquiring both portraits together markedly increases their appeal. Complete old pairs are especially valued, as they preserve visual, historical, and decorative unity. This set conveys nobility, memory, and aesthetic sensibility. 6.5. Commercial closing A pair of signed bourgeois portraits, oil on canvas, from the late 19th century. Two old, elegant, presence-filled works presented in monumental gilded frames, ideal for art lovers of historical art, classical decor, and pieces with soul.
