BULLFIGHTING SCENE Author: Anonymous Spaniard Chronology: 19th century Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 30.5 × 40 cm Provenance: Private collection This work represents a bullfighting scene developed in an open urban space, where a bull occupies the center of the action surrounded by riders and pedestrians. The composition captures the moment of greatest tension of the festivity, while numerous spectators observe the event from the perimeter of the plaza, forming an image of marked popular character. The painting is part of the Spanish costumbrista tradition of the 19th century, an artistic current that found in popular celebrations, markets, pilgrimages, and bullfighting spectacles some of its most representative themes. The artist's interest is not in the individualized portrait of the characters, but in recreating the collective atmosphere, the movement, and the emotional intensity of the event. The color palette, dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and browns, together with diffused lighting, helps create an enveloping atmosphere that heightens the sense of depth and drama. The figures are treated with loose and synthetic brushstrokes, a common device in works intended to capture the overall impression of the scene rather than meticulous detail. Bullfighting depictions were among the most widespread genres in Spanish painting of the 18th and 19th centuries, reflecting the cultural and social importance of these spectacles. This work stands out for its ability to convey the dynamism of the action and for offering a valuable visual testament to the festive traditions of its time. Its small format (30.5 × 40 cm) suggests it may have been conceived for a domestic setting or to be integrated into a private collection devoted to costumbrista scenes.
