Ammonite Iridescent Desmoceras – Madagascar — This ammonite belongs to the species Desmoceras (Desmoceras) latidorsatum, dating to the Early Cretaceous, about 110 million years ago, and comes from the famous fossil-rich zones of Mahajanga, Madagascar. What makes this specimen extraordinary is its iridescent fossilization: the original shell, composed of aragonite, has been exceptionally preserved, keeping its lamellar structure intact. It is precisely this microstructure that, interacting with light, generates an optical phenomenon similar to that of mother-of-pearl, with reflections ranging from emerald green to fiery red, up to golden and violet flashes. An authentic “petrified rainbow,” born from the perfect combination of geological time and favorable environmental conditions.
