Madagascar Copal – Fossil Resin – A specimen of Madagascar copal with a natural, organic form, smooth and translucent, highlighting an intricate play of botanical inclusions and internal bubbles. The warm color, ranging from golden to amber-brown, captures light with great intensity, offering a vibrant and dynamic appearance. Copal is a fossil resin of plant origin, considered the intermediate stage between fresh resin and true amber. Unlike amber, which can be tens of millions of years old, copal is generally younger, ranging from a few thousand to a few million years. Nevertheless, it preserves its natural beauty and scientific charm intact. Madagascar is one of the world's leading sources of copal. The resins come from trees in the Leguminosae family, in particular Hymenaea species, the same botanical family that over geological eras has also produced Caribbean amber. The resinous flows, originally produced as a plant defense mechanism, fell to the ground, trapping plant material and, at times, small organisms. Over time and with environmental conditions, these resins fossilized, transforming into the copal we know today. A striking piece, ideal for enriching natural history, museum, or cabinet of curiosities collections.
