This extraordinary owl carving made of sphalerite impresses with its intense color effect and the impressive transparency of the material. Depending on the angle of light, the color spectrum ranges from bright golden yellow and honey-orange to deep cognac brown and reddish nuances. Particularly appealing is the interplay between the lighter, highly translucent areas and the darker zones. In backlight, the light seems to travel through the figure and makes individual parts glow almost from within. The characteristic strong luster of sphalerite is further enhanced by the polished surface, giving the owl a nearly glassy brilliance. The carving makes very effective use of the mineral’s natural color differences. Large eyes, the detailed plumage, and the plastically shaped wings create a striking decorative appearance, while smaller natural textures and inclusions preserve the mineral origin of the piece. Sphalerite is best known as an important zinc ore, but in transparent to translucent qualities it can develop a remarkable optical effect. Pieces with strong color, suitable for carving, have a special collector and decorative value due to their relatively high sensitivity. In the metaphysical stone tradition, sphalerite is associated with vitality, grounding, and mental clarity. The owl complements this symbolism as a symbol of wisdom and attentive perception. An expressive standalone piece in which the warm color world of sphalerite and the detailed owl form harmoniously interact.
