§ § Frances Mabel Hollams (1877-1963) Portrait of Sir Roland Vaughan Gwynne on horseback at Wootton Manor Farm, 1949, signed and dated 'F. M. Note: Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Roland Vaughan Gwynne (1882–1971) was a British soldier and public figure who served as Mayor of Eastbourne from 1928 to 1931 and Sheriff of Sussex from 1926 to 1927. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry during the First World War and was a keen horse breeder, with connections to the Folkington and Wootton estates in East Sussex. He was knighted in 1957, eight years after the present portrait was painted.
