St. Charles, Missouri. Southern Bank of St. Louis. 1859 $5. PMG Choice

St. Charles, Missouri. Southern Bank of St. Louis. 1859 $5. PMG Choice Fine 15. Contemporary Counterfeit. No. 797. Plate B. As far as Contemporary Counterfeits are concerned, this example which imitates an obligation of the Southern Bank of St. Louis is fairly well-made in technical terms, but certain elements are little more than crude imitations. Take the portrait of James K. Polk at left, bidders may note that Polk's likeness here echoes the "uncanny valley" especially when held against genuine engraved reproductions while elements such as the steamboat vignette are particularly sound in technical terms. PMG comments "Stains." Estimate: $150 - $250. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.

Estimate:£67.96
