About the artist; Gerrit Stapel (Amsterdam, 19 May 1921 – Eindhoven, 18 July 2013) was a Dutch comic artist. He became known for strips and illustrations that he made for the Marten Toonder Studios. He was especially specialized in historical strips, drawn in a realistic style. Stapel began his career as a draughtsman in 1942 in the service of the film company Nederland Film in The Hague, where he ended up in the animation department. There he worked on an anti-Jewish film adaptation of the book Van den vos Reynaerde. At the beginning of 1943 he moved to Bavaria Film on the Laan van Meerdervoort, where pro-German propaganda films were also made. After the liberation Stapel briefly worked as a pianist in an Amsterdam nightclub before he would start making political cartoons for Het Parool. In 1949 he made his first strips for Het Vrije Volk. In 1952 he went into service of the Toonder Studios, for which he would for a long time produce strips and illustrations. In 1955 Stapel anonymously drew the booklet Vleugels boven Afrika, a publication of the Missionary Bureau of the Dutch Reformed Church. Besides the many daily strips for Toonder, Gerrit Stapel also for many years created puzzles for newspapers via the puzzle agency Daane, and he illustrated presentation materials. In 1964 he drew, also outside the Toonder Studios, a strip about Swiebertje for the ladies’ magazine Prinses. In 2003 Stapel received (together with two other laureates) the Bulletje en Boonestaak Schaal for his entire oeuvre. At the end of the eighties Stapel published his last large strip, but he continued drawing until about his ninety-first year. Then he had to give up drawing due to poor eyesight and deteriorating motor skills. Stapel died in 2013 in his hometown Eindhoven. Especially his work for Marten Toonder Studios (in the style of Hans G. Kresse) is of an unprecedented class. He approached Kresse. Not for nothing did Stapel receive Kresse’s request to temporarily take over the drawing work of Eric the Noorman for Pum Pum when Kresse was too busy. Kresse found Stapel’s work wonderful and also the drawings of Eric that had been drawn by Stapel, wonderful.... This lot contains a beautiful, large drawing that Gerrit Stapel made for "King Arthur". The drawing is in ink and washed with watercolour/ A beautiful painting. See what a wonderful technique with brush and East Indian ink. This is pure Art. See also the photos that give an honest image of what is offered. This beautiful drawing will be well packaged and sent to the new owner by registered post."} } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } }
