SWEDEN. 4 Ducat, 1852. Stockholm Mint. Oscar I. NGC MS-61.

Unique in Private Ownership with only one other known The Unicorn of Swedish 19th Century Coinage SWEDEN. 4 Ducat, 1852. Stockholm Mint. Oscar I. NGC MS-61. Fr-88; KM-670; SM-3; SG-3; not in Hagander; Bruun-13492. Weight: 13.98 gms. Mintmaster: Alexander Grandinson (AG). Engraver: Ludvig Persson Lundgren. Unique in private hands. Very light contact marks in obverse fields with no discernable wear on the portrait; the reverse nearly as-struck with flaming luster in the fields and perfection in the draped and crowned shield. For reasons unknown, a small number (possibly four) of Swedish coin sets were produced in 1852, and for those few sets alone 4 and 2 Ducats as well as 1/2 and ¼ Riksdaler were struck. Examples of these denominations were not even handed in to the Royal Swedish Coin Cabinet, who later had to purchase the 2 Ducat and the two silver coins through private treaties and public auctions. The 4 Ducat, however, is still missing from their collection. The only other known 4 Ducat 1852 rests in the University Coin Collection in Oslo. Estimate: €140,000 - €180,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here.
