Intensely Rare "Reconstruction of the Republic" Gold Medal Post-Hung-hsien Era Commemorative (t) CHINA. Overseas Chinese National Protection Army Gold Award Medal, Year 5 (1916). NGC MS-63. L&M-Unlisted; Barac-Unlisted. Weight: 30.0 gms. Issued for the reconstruction of the republic following the toppling of Yuan Shih-kai [Hung-hsien]. Obverse: Roaring lion standing left atop globe; Kuomintang star and crossed banners in background; "Overseas Chinese National Protection Army" on right banner; "Reconstruction of the Republic Medal" on scroll below; Reverse: Legend in four vertical lines, with the two lines on the left struck: "Presented by Cho Chih-chen, commander-in-chief of the Overseas Chinese National Protection Army," and with the two lines on the right engraved: "Singapore, Lin I-shun." EXTREMELY RARE and captivating, this award offers vibrant straw yellow surfaces, with a few burnished spots sprinkled throughout. The engraving to Lin I-shun is quite clear and bold, making this an important piece the history of the early republic. Cho Chih-chen (Zhou Zhizhen) returned from Singapore to China in 1915, just before Yuan Shih-kai led his brief and unsuccessful attempt to return China to an imperial monarchy, with him styled as the Hung-hsien emperor. Cho founded the Overseas Chinese National Protection Army, and was instrumental in the downfall of Yuan along with his ill-fated imperial aspirations. Lin I-shun (Lin Yishun/Lim Yee Soon) was a Singaporean businessman of Chinese descent who, like Cho, was involved in republican efforts, both before and after Yuan's imperial bid in 1916. Later, he served as the first co-council member of the Singapore branch of the Kuomintang. Estimate: $30,000 - $45,000. Click here for certification details from NGC.
