An exceptional example of Italian Mid-Century Modern clock design A distinctive vintage RITZ "DONVITO" mechanical table clock, dating from approximately the 1960s to the early 1970s, featuring an elegant circular dial, a gold-tone metal bezel, an integrated mechanical date display, an alarm function and an unusual inclined tabletop support. Unlike traditional mechanical alarm clocks, generally designed to stand vertically, the DONVITO adopts a more architectural and unconventional approach: its circular body rests on an elegant open metal stand, allowing the dial to remain almost horizontal, with a gentle inclination for comfortable reading. This distinctive configuration makes it particularly suitable as an elegant executive desk clock, office accessory or decorative table timepiece. A charming example of vintage Italian design, combining mechanical craftsmanship, geometric simplicity and understated elegance. RITZ – Italian clockmaking and design heritage The RITZ name is associated with Ritz-Italora of Milan, a company connected with Italy's post-war tradition of mechanical clocks, precision manufacturing and industrial design. Established in 1937, Italora developed expertise in precision mechanical manufacturing and became associated with significant examples of Italian modernist clock design. Among the company's historically documented productions are the Cronotime clock designed by Pio Manzù, originally conceived in 1966, and the Rocket clock designed by Richard Sapper in 1971. These objects illustrate Ritz-Italora's connection with the evolution of Italian industrial design during the 1960s and 1970s. The DONVITO presented here reflects the same period's interest in clean geometry, functional innovation and the transformation of everyday timepieces into decorative objects. No specific designer attribution has been established for this particular model. Design – A circular dial with a radial graphic composition The most striking feature of this clock is undoubtedly its beautifully balanced dial. The circular silver-tone face is decorated with twelve fine black radial lines extending from the central axis towards the outer edge. Rather than relying on conventional Arabic or Roman numerals, the design uses these slender geometric divisions to create a minimalist, almost architectural composition. The effect recalls the graphic experimentation and modernist aesthetics characteristic of the 1960s. Two long, tapered black hands contrast elegantly with the pale metallic background, accompanied by finer central hands. The RITZ logo appears above the small rectangular date aperture positioned at 6 o'clock. Inside this window, white numerals are displayed against a black background, creating a particularly attractive visual contrast. The name DONVITO is printed on the right-hand side of the dial, providing another distinctive identifying detail. Surrounding the dial is a broad gold-tone metal bezel with a softly brushed appearance, complemented by a transparent Plexiglas crystal. The combination of silver, gold and black gives the clock a refined appearance, equally appropriate for a vintage office interior or a contemporary design collection. An unusual inclined tabletop construction One of the most interesting features of the DONVITO is its unconventional supporting structure. Instead of the familiar two-legged arrangement of traditional alarm clocks, the clock is supported by a sculptural metal wire framework forming an open circular base. This arrangement lifts the body above the tabletop and holds the face at a shallow viewing angle. The result is a visually light, almost floating construction, in which the functional supporting elements become an integral part of the overall design. The white rear housing contrasts with the gold-tone bezel and metallic support, adding another layer to the composition. Its compact dimensions and low profile make it particularly attractive for an executive desk, writing table, bookshelf or Mid-Century Modern interior. Unlike ordinary bedside alarm clocks, this model is particularly appealing as a decorative mechanical clock for an office or elegant tabletop setting. Mechanical movement – W29 The clock is equipped with a traditional mechanical hand-wound movement, marked W29, featuring timekeeping, an alarm function and a mechanical date display. The movement is visible in the detailed photographs taken during disassembly. Its construction features brass-coloured movement plates, a traditional mechanical gear train and a balance assembly. Unlike modern quartz clocks, this timepiece operates through a traditional mechanical movement and requires manual winding rather than batteries. The rear of the clock provides separate controls for adjusting the time, alarm and calendar date, together with the winding controls. All three functions have been individually tested and confirmed to be working correctly: Mechanical clock movement: Tested and working. Mechanical alarm: Tested and working. Date display and calendar mechanism: Tested and working. The clock represents the practical mechanical engineering typical of the period, when decorative desk clocks were still produced with traditional clockwork mechanisms. Maintenance and documented history An interesting detail discovered inside the clock is evidence of a previous service intervention dated 17 May 1973. This provides a tangible historical reference confirming that the clock was already in use during the early 1970s. The date is particularly interesting from a historical and collecting perspective, although it does not establish the exact year of manufacture. The clock has recently been carefully disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled. Following this maintenance, the clock movement, alarm and date mechanism were tested and confirmed to be functioning correctly. The clock is supplied fully assembled and in working condition. As with all vintage mechanical timepieces, some variation in timekeeping accuracy may occur depending on winding conditions, positioning and normal mechanical wear. A distinctive vintage Italian design object With its elegant proportions, geometric radial dial, unusual inclined support and traditional mechanical movement, the RITZ DONVITO is much more than an ordinary alarm clock. It is a characterful decorative timepiece combining vintage Italian design sensibility with practical mechanical engineering. Its low-profile circular construction, floating appearance and gold-tone detailing make it particularly suitable for collectors and enthusiasts of Mid-Century Modern interiors. An attractive addition to collections of Italian vintage design, mechanical desk clocks, modernist timepieces, vintage office accessories and twentieth-century decorative objects. This is an original vintage mechanical clock, not a modern quartz-controlled timepiece. Its movement incorporates mechanical regulating components , which means its behaviour and timekeeping characteristics should not be compared directly with those of modern quartz clocks. Although the clock has been tested and keeps time during testing, no guarantee of quartz-level accuracy or continuous long-term precision is implied. Mechanical timekeeping may be influenced by environmental conditions, temperature, battery condition, positioning, movement wear and the characteristics of the regulating mechanism. Occasional adjustments may be necessary. The mechanical bell alarm has been tested successfully. However, alarm timing and operation should be understood in the context of the original vintage mechanical construction. The movement contains delicate components that should be handled carefully. Any future maintenance, regulation, cleaning or repairs should preferably be carried out by a qualified technician familiar with vintage mechanical and electromechanical clocks. No guarantee is provided regarding future maintenance requirements or the remaining service life of individual vintage components. Authenticity and condition The item offered is the actual vintage clock illustrated in the photographs. It is sold in its existing vintage condition, with signs of age, use, surface wear and possible minor imperfections consistent with its period. The description is based on direct observation, inspection and functional testing of the item. Historical and technical information is provided in good faith. Where an exact production date cannot be established, the period attribution should be considered approximate. Photographs and visual presentation All photographs form an integral part of the description. Please examine them carefully before bidding, particularly for surface condition, cosmetic imperfections, construction details and signs of age. Colours, tones, reflections and the appearance of materials may vary slightly depending on lighting conditions, photographic equipment and individual monitor or screen settings. Vintage functionality The operational information provided refers to the condition observed during testing before sale. As with any vintage mechanical , performance may vary over time, and future servicing or adjustment may become necessary.
