Tapestry - 76 cm - 64 cm - Tapestry Michiel de Ruyter

Very beautiful, detailed and important piece, a rare depiction of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. Late 19th-century wool-work tapestry with a mahogany frame. Bestowal of the Order of Saint Michael in the name of Louis XIV by the Spanish ambassador. This very high French decoration has been awarded to only a few non-French individuals. Michiel received it because of his victory in the Four Days' Battle. The French had seen that victory as a skilled lesson by a great master. The English saw it as something else.
