Tatsuzo Shimaoka (島岡達三, 1919–2007) - Vase - Stoneware - No customs

Ceramic vase by Tatsuzo Shimaoka — Living National Treasure — Jōmon decoration From the collection of Mr. D, Europe. Shipped from Europe: no customs fees for EU bidders. Rare on the European market. A bulbous vase with a short slightly flared neck, made by Tatsuzo Shimaoka around 1980. The body is covered in a grey-beige celadon glaze worked with rope impressions: diagonal striations across the entire surface using the jōmon-zōgan technique create a fine, regular network of relief lines characteristic of the artist’s style. A few stylised ginkgo leaf motifs in rust-brown punctuate the surface. The partially glazed terracotta base shows wheel craftsmanship. Piece signed on the base. Supplied with its signed tomobako. Dimensions Height: 24 cm — Diameter: 17 cm Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1919–2007) Japanese ceramicist trained under Shoji Hamada in Mashiko, one of the founders of the mingei movement. He developed a personal oeuvre based on the jōmon-zōgan technique — rope-pattern inlay in clay, drawing from Japan’s Neolithic traditions — which he combined with Mashiko’s natural glazes. Designated a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuhō) in 1996. His works are held in numerous international public collections.
