Thaddeus Welch (American, 1844-1919) Tonalist Oil on Canvas, Scene

Thad (Thaddeus) Welch Tonalist landscape in oil on canvas, depicting a coastal headland or cliff in Marin County, California. The composition features a sun-drenched rock face rendered in warm ochre and sienna tones against a pale atmospheric sky, with dark coniferous trees and a sliver of water in the middle ground. The work is executed with soft, blended brushwork characteristic of the California Tonalist school. The reverse of the canvas bears a faded pencil inscription reading Scene in Marin County Cal. by Thad Welch. The wooden stretcher bar features a handwritten ink note in the upper right reading SIGNED: LOWER LEFT CORNER. A paper gallery label from Stoneden Mansion Gallery is adhered to the frame backing, identifying the artist as Thad Welch, the title as Scene in Marin County, Cal., and the size; the label also includes the name Kitty Curry and an address in Suisun, California. The painting is housed in a period-style tiered gilt wood frame with fluted coves and bead-and-reel molding. Faint signature visible on lower left. Sight size: 14.25"W x 9.75"H. Dimensions: 20.25"W x 16"H Weight: 3.4 lbs Condition Request Condition Report Good.
