The Cries of Paris, Paris, c. 1760 Folded fan, with a double paper panel painted in gouache. On one side, eleven panels feature portraits of small street vendors known as the “cris de Paris,” made famous notably by Larmessin’s engravings. One can recognize a water carrier in the center, an umbrella vendor, and a hurdy-gurdy player. The reverse side is painted with a tower set among groves and trees. Ivory frame (Elephantidae spp.) painted with flowers framing a panel depicting a couple enjoying the garden in front of their home. Height: 27 cm.
