Large format vintage chromogenic print on resin coated Kodak paper, with 'Kodak Professional Paper' watermarks, mounted on card. Very rare large format print of Hubble’s most important photograph. The Hubble Deep Field is one of the most iconic and important images taken by NASA in the last 50 years. By pointing the Hubble Telescope at a tiny patch of dark space above Ursa Major (the Big Dipper) for ten consecutive days NASA captured a stunningly dense snapshot of around 3000 galaxies invisible to the naked eye. These 3000 galaxies were visible in an area about one 24-millionth of the sky, the equivalent of a pin head at arms length. This incredible image proves that we are surrounded by millions of galaxies like our own, making the viewer acutely aware of earth’s smallness in the grand scheme of the universe. The most useful insight from the Hubble Deep Field relates to the distant newly formed galaxies which appear as dark blurs in the photograph. Because light travels at a limited speed, over such immense distances the Hubble Telescope functions as a kind of time machine, witnessing light from billions of years ago. Thus, this galactic core sample reveals the appearance of galaxies shortly after the Big Bang. Indeed, many of the galaxies in the Field may have since grown or merged with other galaxies and look completely different today.
