In the center, an old man holds a fainted woman while another body lies inert, surrounded by figures expressing despair and misery. Theatrical lighting and rigorous drawing give the scene a heroic and moral dimension. José Aparicio Inglada, history painter and disciple of David, achieves a work of great narrative force, where compositional classicism combines with patriotic and humanitarian sentiment.
