The Illustrated London News, Volume XX (Band 20) January to June 1852 London, William Little, 198 Strand, 1852 Language: English Historical compilation volume of the famous British illustrated weekly newspaper The Illustrated London News from the year 1852. The large-format volume contains an extensive collection of contemporary reports, news, and wood-engraved illustrations from the mid-19th century. The magazine was one of the leading illustrated news publications of its time and documented political, social, scientific, and cultural events in Great Britain and around the world. Particularly noteworthy A special feature of this volume is the numerous illustrations of the London Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Crystal Palace. Among the representations visible in the photographs are: - A large-format panorama with numerous exhibition stands from the Great Exhibition. - An impressive, two-page interior view of the Crystal Palace with its monumental iron and glass construction. - Further views of the exhibition architecture and various international departments. - Historical cityscapes, landscapes, portraits, and social events. - Reports and illustrations of maritime affairs, including a depiction of the Australian steamship Cleopatra. - Depictions of political figures, including Thomas Moore. - Illustrations of international events and Victorian English social life. The numerous wood engravings provide a vivid impression of the reporting and image culture of the Victorian era. Of particular interest is the extensive pictorial documentation of the Crystal Palace, one of the most significant buildings of early industrial architecture. Binding and binding style Contemporary, representative half-leather binding with reddish-brown leather spine, elaborate ornamental gold tooling, and gold-embossed spine title. Large-format, substantial compendium with numerous full-page and double-page wood engravings as well as smaller illustrations within the articles. On one depicted page there is an old handwritten note. Condition Age-appropriate condition with evident signs of use. The leather spine shows more significant rubbing, especially at the raised bands. The gold tooling is largely preserved. The pages show occasional age-related discolorations, small stains, and signs of wear. Individual leaves show edge damage and creasing. The depicted wood engravings are mostly well preserved and clearly detailed. A complete collation of all issues, pages, and illustrations has not been performed. Therefore, the completeness of the volume cannot be guaranteed. The photographs show a representative portion of the contents and are part of the condition description.
