THE NECKLACE CASE. — Plea on behalf of Mademoiselle Le Guay d’Oliva, a minor who had attained legal emancipation, the defendant; against the Attorney General, the prosecutor. Paris: Simon & Nyon, 1786. In-4, garnet morocco leather, with fillets and roulette on the edges; covers adorned with a wide mosaic border of salmon-pink morocco leather decorated with gold floral garlands and shells in the corners, embellished spine, the panels decorated with a small, narrow mosaic cartouche of the same material, inner frame of the same morocco adorned with a set of five gold fillets, chestnut-colored moiré lining and endpapers, gilt edges, slipcase (Noulhac 1908). First edition of this defense of Mademoiselle Le Guay d’Oliva (1761–1789), a young courtesan unwittingly implicated in the famous Affair of the Necklace. A unique copy enriched with 10 original watercolors by Georges Ripart, printed separately from the text, and a watercolor portrait of Mademoiselle d’Oliva. A very beautiful Noulhac binding, decorated in the 18th-century Rococo style. Paper restoration at the corner of folio F2.
