The rare Great War ‘Battle of Poelcappelle’ M.M. group of four awarded to Lance Corporal J. E. B. Nichol, 1st Battalion, Royal Newfoundland Regiment, who was one of the historic "Blue Puttees” - the very first contingent of volunteers who enlisted at the outbreak of the war in August and September 1914. A veteran of Gallipoli, he was also wounded in action at Beaumont Hamel, 1 July 1916, when the Regiment was virtually wiped out. Nichol was wounded for a second time at Marcoing, 20 November 1917 Military Medal, G.V.R. (129 A. L. Cpl. J. E. B. [sic] Nichol. 1/1 Newf’d: R.); 1914-15 Star (129 Pte E. J. B. Nichol. R. Newf’d R.); British War and Victory Medals (129 Pte. E. J. B. Nichol. R. Newf’d R.) mounted for display, with Shoulder Title, nearly very fine (4) £1,000-£1,400.
