The Stoning of the Adulterous Woman, 17th century Italian school

The Stoning of the Adulterous Woman, 17th century Italian school

Descriptio Oil on canvas, frame not attached, measures: 117 x 97 cm cm. The episode that we observe here is narrated in the Gospel of John (Jn 8,1-11) when Jesus marched to the Mount of Olives. Very early in the morning he returned to the Temple again, and all the people came to him; he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery and placed her in the middle: "Master, " they told him, "this woman has been caught in flagrant adultery. Moses in the Law commanded us to stone women like that; what do you say?" –They told him tempting him, to have something to accuse him of. But Jesus, bent down and began to write with his finger on the ground. As they insisted on asking him, he got up and told them: "The one of you who is without sin, let him throw the stone first." And bending down again, he continued writing on the ground. On hearing him, they began to leave one after the other, beginning with the oldest, and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the middle. Jesus got up and said to her: Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? No one, Lord, ‘ she answered. Jesus said to her: "Neither do I condemn you; go your way and from now on sin no more." Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
